An Introduction to Retail Bonds – A Session for Advisors
Venue: London Stock Exchange, 10 Paternoster Sq, London EC4M 7LS
Date: 14:00 – 16:30, Thursday 25th February 2016
Topic: The opportunity for UK charities to raise loan finance from ethical investors through listed retail bonds
Who it’s for: Advisors to charities
Background
In February 2010, London Stock Exchange introduced the Order book for Retail Bonds (ORB) in response to growing private investor demand for greater accessibility to fixed income securities. The ORB allows private investors to buy and sell bonds as easily as they would shares, and provides issuers with the opportunity to raise capital and have their retail bonds traded on a transparent, regulated market. Since ORB was launched, over £4.7 billion has been invested in retail bonds for a variety of different issuers such as Tesco and National Grid. There has also been particular demand, from both individual and institutional investors, for ethical investment opportunities. This session is part of a series of events to introduce more charities to the retail bond market.
The session
In Part One of the session, attendees will gain a thorough understanding of the retail bond market. Through a panel of expert speakers, and using case studies and worked examples, we will explore: • the history of ORB and what if offers investors and issuers
• why a wide range of borrowers are issuing retail bonds
• the market demand for listed ethical investments
• when a retail bond may be suitable
• how retail bonds compare with alternative financing options
• the process of raising finance through the Retail Charity Bonds platform
In Part Two we will invite attendees to participate in a roundtable discussion, chaired by Allia’s Tim Jones, about how to grow the charity bond market. We will be seeking attendees’ views on the potential demand from charities for bond issues; the barriers or concerns that might deter them; and what additional support could enable more charities to come to the bond market.
